Rafting Reflection

The 13 year 8s went rafting on 15/5/19. I found it really fun, I got to learn new things, be in the outdoors. I found it quite easy, to be honest (My friend Sinead can’t say the same though). I loved going over all the big waves and rapids and having the adrenaline rush through me, I guess you could say that I really enjoy being in those situations. I also believe that my raft was the best because we had mixed boys and girls raft of only four people(not including the instructor, Jasper) so we got to build our teamwork skills, and Jasper let us go over all the big waves and rapids. Sinead and I were in the middle of the raft while Xavier and Jeordie were in front and Jasper was at the back steering. When the water was calm some people decided to jump onto each other's rafts, others practically jumped in the water. Unfortunately, Jeordie jumped in at the wrong time and went swimming with a dead cow. Overall, it was a great trip and I can’t wait for the next challenge!

Tech (cooking)

For tech this term, I am in cooking. I haven't been posting often so here are some pictures of the things I have cooked. Apple skewers, basic scones, chicken stir-fry and bread. (We also made pasta but I forgot to take a picture)

The class has been making self-portraits using google draw for our Kawa Of Care. This is mine. We learned to use different tools that we don't normally use and this is my outcome.

How to… Survive a week of boredom

Step 1

Create a list of fun things you could do e.g…

Try to ride the dog.

Muck about with a cardboard box

Annoy siblings.

Go on a noun randomizer and draw what the noun is.

Try not to laugh(with or without water).

Invite friends to play a video game.

Explore the bush/ forest/ area of land.

Read your favorite book(out loud) using different voices for different characters.

Close the curtains a have a party with no one

Step 2

Do what you can that is written on the list to pass the time. If you run out of things to do on the list repeat or come up with a few more things to do.

Teachers Strike

15/8/18 Almost 30,000 school teachers and principals were striking around NZ. It was the first time in 24 years and 1479 schools were closed. A lot of teachers were trying to get attention for better pay.

The problem is that over the years less and less people are deciding to become teachers because they don’t get enough pay and there are more and more kids being born. That means that the ratio of kids to a teacher is growing and the classrooms are getting too full. Not only is it unfair for teachers but also for students, having a class with 60 people would be a nightmare!

Mining on conservation land shouldn't be banned

Most people know about the”No mining on conservation land” protest. I know everyone that was at the Taramakau bridge opening will know about it(there was a whole convoy protesting). Anyway, there are 2 types of people, people that are against mining and people that are for mining. Today I will be telling you why we should be able to mine on conservation land.
Mining is a big part of history, people have mined for a long time and if we get rid of mining how will we find valuable resources/minerals such as coal and gold? If we can’t find enough of these resources then what will happen? We need coal for our fires and petrol so if we get rid of a whole lot of mining in NZ we might have to start importing coal and petrol from other countries(if we aren’t doing that already). Quite a few people will be driving electric cars but what about the people that can’t afford an electric car or people that have vintage cars, not many people will be able to get fuel. And if we don’t mine enough gold how will we make fancy NZ jewellery.

Just about everyone also knows that lots of people are losing their jobs and here on the west coast it is really hard to find jobs so that means a lot of people have to move to find new jobs, some even have to leave the country. If we can plant plants and restore the nature after we mine why do we need this restriction? We may never know...
